Protein Wisdom Does Dillinger

Protein Wisdom has become the blog home for right-wing bitterness over Obama's election as president. Here's Jeff Goldstein doing a full Dillinger in protest (quoted in full).

Another moment of unabashed OUTLAW pragmatism
Sure, I know I’m supposed to break down cardboard boxes before I put them in the recycle bin. But fuck it, I took a chance.

And if the truck decides it doesn’t want to pick ‘em up as is, those boxes can sit there in the street until they become moldy or weather shredded — or home to a family of angry bobcats, for all I care.

It ain’t like my name’s on the things.

What a rebel!

Ric, long time, no talk.

As you know and have cautioned me about, I loathe jeff, but even I was surprised as the churlishly stupid way he and his friends have taken this defeat. When I perused his site, I noted that he was in TWO blog wars with other conservatives, because neither saw this as a Holy War.

Now, it's apparent that Jeff is somewhat of an outlier, but still, if you visit Patterico's Pontifications or Jammie Wearing Fool, we have a group of people so absolutely crazy they refuse to participate in society unless their candidate wins.

Their beliefs about Obama are just not sustainable. Newsweek has a seven part series on the Presidential campaign which reveals (unfortunately for me...I wanted a New Deal 2) a left-leaning centrist, but (fortunately for me) an intelligent and disciplined man, who is careful and cautious in a way that calling him some radical Alinsky-ite is just laughable.

I hesitate to say this about any other conservatives, but I imagine Goldstein's problem is Obama's race. Nothing else explains the bitterness and the hatred, the intentional mis-reading of simple quotes and belief in the absurd he manifests. I never believed he was a racist, just that he opposed the opposite political party's constituent groups. But, the visceral nature of his opposition and its ugliness have changed my mind! Wow

In the end, goldstein notwithstanding, I believe that 30% of this country is becoming ungovernable. I hear law school classmates discuss hiding money and filibustering cabinet appointments. I hear talk show hosts re-discovering an interest in limiting Executive power through the Courts. And, I hear just the worst commentary about the news media.

In reference to that, is Red America doomed like the South after the Civil War....you know, so backward and damaged it was like another country? With more Hispanics reaching voting age and more angry old white guys dying, are we at an end to a loyal opposition?

So much for Rove and his majority, huh?

Tim--Good to hear from you. I hope law school is going well. I've wondered about the right wing having a secessionist mentality for a long time and post about it fairly regularly (for example, http://red-state.blogspot.com/2008/11/spark-of-sympathy-for-conservatives.html).

Re: Jeff. I was also surprised at the depth of the anger at Protein Wisdom. Jeff's always had a bitter edge but he seems to be going to a very dark place. I don't think its racism with Jeff though. I can see a case for racism as now emerging along with the pervasive homophobia and misogyny at Protein Wisdom. But I tend to think that the main animus is toward white liberals and that Jeff views Obama more as figure of white liberalism than anything else. Time will tell though.

I always gave him that benefit of the doubt, but he connects the economic collapse to lending money to minorities through the CRA and Fannie and Freddie and then to ACORN and Obama. It's a tenuous trail and it does make me wonder on second thought, if this just isn't the bile left over from his absolute hatred and fear of the "New Left." One would think such hatred would have dissipated somewhere in 1972 with the destruction of any political manifestation of Jerry Rubin and the gang AND one would think Obama's victory over Bobby Seal would serve as the final symbolic stake through the heart of the New Left, but Goldstein seems really afraid of them....which is odd seeing how he was like 8 in '72. One wonders about the conversations he heard from the Silent Majority types in his childhood home?

So, I imagine, upon reconsideration, you are more right than I was.

PS Law school will be over soon and then the crushing student loan debt can finally be faced!
