Peace to Cindy Sheehan

There's a report on CNN that Cindy Sheehan has decided to leave the peace movement and return to her hometown in California. Bless her. Ms. Sheehan is a mighty woman who's strived imaginatively and effectively to end the misbegotten war in Iraq. The fact that she hasn't succeeded says much more about the rigidity and corruption of our political system than it does about the quality of her efforts as a war protester. She deserved infinitely better than what she got and I wish her well as she figures out what to do next.

I'm actually quite saddened that she is retiring. I always found her to be such an inspirational figure, especially in a time we needed them.

I also posted on this today. Peace is hard to find when you've lost your son to a cause that has no meaning or purpose. When we lose the will to make our voices heard, we have lost everything.

Yes, I understand how hard it will be for her to find some peace in the context of Casey Sheehan's death. Still, it is possible for people to regenerate after everything has been lost. Certainly, Cindy Sheehan deserves a chance to figure it out in her own way and our best wishes as she does so.

What worries me is that she will become a "right-wing chew toy." They mocked her when she fought against the war. Now they'll say she has given up and only wanted attention or money. Kudos to Cindy Sheehan for her efforts. Let us never forget all her sacrifices. Those of us who supported her fight understand her efforts to rest from that fight. Those who denegrated her the whole time will never understand.
