Thomas Friedman--Idiot
Thomas Friedman of the New York Times has a column in the Herald-Leader about rating presidential candidates by how much they challenge their "base." That's too clever by half. How about rating candidates on what their policies and leadership would do for the country as a whole?

If I am correct to assume that you are talking about his sept. 21 NYT article, "No Laughing Matter," then I believe you owe an apology to Friedman. While, for the nature of the op-ed, he may oversimplify his article by providing a simple definition of his test, you are restating his opinion. Friedman is challenging the candidates, McCain in particular, to do what is best for the country as a whole by challenging his dogmatic constituency. This is illustrated when Friedman challenges the next president to challenge everyone to do something hard, for the sake of the US, as a whole.
That seems a bit idealistic, to expect someone who is still a candidate to "challenge" their base and still get elected.
