A New Job for Rove: Outing Republicans

OUT WITH THE OLD CRAIGS. It looks like the Republicans are going to drive Larry Craig out of the Senate before the drama over his resignation becomes two weeks of embarrassment. Of course, if they were that worried about embarrassment, they should be calling for impeachment proceedings against Bush and Cheney.

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE NEW? What about the other Larry Craigs and Mark Foleys out there leading double lives just waiting to further embarrass the Republican Party and the Bush administration? If President Bush really thought his policies were important for national security and economic prosperity, he would do something about the sexual indiscretions of other Republican politicians as well.

PRE-EMPTIVE OUTINGS. Obviously, the best way to deal with Republican proclivities for speed-dialing prostitutes, flirting with pages, and bathroom boudoirs is for the Bush administration to "out" wayward Republican politicians before they get into trouble. Of course, I don't mean "outing" in terms of giving indiscretions broad publicity in the media. That would be counter-productive. What's needed are really confidential "outings" where investigators inform responsible figures that Staffer X, Senator Y, or Representative Z is engaged in embarrassing indiscretions and the administration informs those people that they need to spend more time with their families or fulfill their life-long ambitions to live in a kibbutz. Given that the Bush administration would view the sexuality of Republicans as a matter of national security, it goes without saying that these kinds of confidential outings would be classified as "national security outings" so they wouldn't be leaked to the media. Thus, the program would be called the "Pre-Emptive National Security Outing Program" or PENSOP for short.

A JOB FOR ROVE. But who would be the best person to lead the PENSOP program. Once again the answer is obvious. It has to be Karl Rove. He's loyal to the president, extremely bright, full of energy, and currently unemployed. One of Karl Rove's great contributions to Republican Party politics was the systematizing of opposition research. That means he would be the perfect person to investigate wayward Republicans as if they were the opposition. And Rove would probably enjoy the job. In fact, the mere prospect that Rove would be investigating them would be enough to convince a lot of indiscreet Republicans to change their ways. PENSOP would make the Republican Party a more moral party as well as a more effective political party. It's the only way to go.

Mitch McConnell would be an obvious choice for the next "outing," don't you think?

Interesting comment. Activists in the Kentucky Democratic Party have thought that McConnell was gay for the 17 years I've lived here. But I haven't seen any sentiment to settle the issue by either trying to prove he was gay or outing him. Kentucky Democrats talk about how "mean-spirited" Republicans are. Perhaps they just don't want to engage in something as "mean-spirited" as outing. Here's a place where I agree with Kentucky Democrats. No matter how you cut it, outing is an ugly business. That's why it should be left to people like Karl Rove.

This is only slightly less childish than the weenie boy idiocy.

Your view that Republicans care whether or not somebody is teh ghey is laughable.

So, you disagreed with Rogers and their ilk threatening to out people?

I know I do. that's a terrible thing to do to anyone. If Larry Craig wants to be Roy Cohn, that's his business.

Unfortunately, the Republican party and its hangers on, at least in Idaho, felt differently:

From The Idaho Family Values Association:

"The Party, in the wake of the Mark Foley incident in particular, can no longer straddle the fence on the issue of homosexual behavior. Even setting Senator Craig's situation aside, the Party should regard participation in the self-destructive homosexual lifestyle as incompatible with public service on behalf of the GOP."

Sweet people you vote with, JD.

As I do not live in Idaho, nor am I am member of the Idaho Family Values Association, nor do I agree with their postiion, I could give a flying fuck as to their position.

Indiana Republicans are better?

No, the Indiana Family Institute and Advance America control the parts of the Indiana legislature not controlled by the Chamber of Commerce and Indiana Manufacturer's Association. They have been, for the past two elections, campaigning almost solely to pass that "Constitutional Amendment" here. Problem is, the writers of the Indiana were too clever for these rubes. The issue is so popular within the GOP, however, that there was speculation that Eric Miller, local moral leader, would challenge Governor Daniels in the primary.

Sadly, for me, he called that off. Daniels is already wounded and didn't need to take fire from the Right as well.

I find it also fascinating that the Indiana Family Institute's website offers a video of local icon Tony Dungy and his opinions re: same sex marriage. For only $25, you too can hear how the IFI supports "traditional marriage."

For Jd, enjoyed the vehemence there, but those are your fellows. You want to saddle me with the remarks of some crazy bastard on the Left? Well, you get saddled with Eric Miller and the Idaho Family folks. Just the way you're playing the game.

So, the Chamber of Commerce and the Manufacturers Association controls the Indiana Legislature, not the Legislators?

Ric - I am not a member of the Indiana Family Values Association either. I have no idea who Eric Miller is, and if he wishes to run in the primary against Gov. Daniel, he will have an uphill climb.

What is so wrong about traditional marriage?

Given the nature of the man you referenced, I would be honored to learn from a man as good as Tony Dungy. If you feel like using him as the face of the homophobic Rethuglikkkans, have at it.

Is Dungy a Republican? The last football coach I listened to for political advice was Gerald Ford, so you'll pardon me if I'm skeptical on what sort of man Dungy is. As a Vikings fan in the olden days, I've rooted for him for a long time. When it comes to football, I think he's an expert. Public policy: not so much.

JD, did you worship Knight when he was here?

I admire Robert Montgomery Knight, and he is one of the kindest people that I have ever met. I got to talk to him in a gym, just the 2 of us, for about half an hour. But, growing up in Illinois, I did not worship him, nor was I a fan of his.

If you do not know about what kind of man Tony Dungy is, read some of the non-football related stories about him. Rick Reilly in Sports Illustrated wrote one of the most moving articles about Dungy and his character that I have ever read.

I have no idea what party he belongs to, but I would vote for him even if he ran as a Dem.

Ironic that the only people that are "outing" people are Democrats (Rogers). Blackmail and extortion are alright, so long as it is done to keep the sheeple in line, huh?
